Inverness missed the chance to move into second place in the Scottish Premiership as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ross County.

An own goal from Gary Warren on 76 minutes cancelled out a first-half strike by Marley Watkins in a hard fought Highland derby.

County survived a slight scare after just eight minutes when Antonio Reguero flapped at Greg Tansey's corner but Martin Woods cleared the ball off the line.

The visitors responded though when Liam Boyce unleashed a drive from 25 yards which beat Ryan Esson as the ball flashed just past the target.

Reguero was again in trouble from another Caley Thistle corner when the keeper spilled a header from Gary Warren header but no Inverness player was on hand to take advantage.

Ross County then missed a glorious chance when a close range shot from Tony Dingwall was well blocked by Esson after Marcus Fraser whipped in a dangerous cross.

Three minutes later Tansey won a loose ball and passed to Watkins, who drove forward before sending a low curling shot from the edge of the area past Reguero.

Inverness started the second half brightly and Danny Williams had a net-bound shot blocked by Paul Quinn and Carl Tremarco just failed to connect with the resulting corner.

And Josh Meekings then had a strike cleared off the line by Woods as Caley pressed for the second goal.

But County hit back when Jackson Irvine sent a cross in from the right and Warren steered the ball past Esson under pressure from Jake Jervis.

Jervis should have turned the game in County's favour just after that, but crashed his 12-yard shot into the side-netting.

Reguero then pulled off a superb save from Tansey's free-kick as Inverness sought a winner.

Late on there were strong appeals for an ICT spot kick when Watkins was taken down in the box by Regeuro but referee John Beaton waved play on and the teams had to settle for a point apiece.
