Goals from Lucas and Voronin seal win

Liverpool beat Swiss side FC Lucerne 2-1 to record their second pre-season friendly victory. After beating Tranmere 1-0 at the weekend, goals from Lucas Leiva and Andrei Voronin were enough to give the Reds victory over their Swiss Super League opponents in the Allemand Stadium. Spaniard Danny Pacheco was the architect of Liverpool's opener on 10 minutes, combining well with Brazil midfielder Lucas who slotted home coolly to round off the move. But Lucerne drew level two minutes later when Reds debutant Philipp Degen failed to win a far-post header, allowing the ball to break to Mario Gavranovic who converted an uncontested header. But Ukraine forward Voronin restored the lead on 37 minutes when he took control of the ball 16 yards from goal and produced a sweetly-hit lob. He was a constant thorn for the Lucerne defence in the second half and went close to grabbing a second but there were no further goals. As well as Degen, Red boss Rafa Benitez also handed new goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri a debut. Steven Gerrard was left on the bench but Dutch winger Ryan Babel was given his first 45 minutes since sustaining an ankle injury in his country's Euro 2008 preparations.
