Macclesfield keeper Jon Brain gifts Vale victory

Macclesfield keeper Jon Brain's late howler gifted Port Vale three points as they won a nervous derby 2-0. The visitors took the lead five minutes from time when Adnan Ahmed, on loan from Tranmere, let fly with a speculative 40-yard drive straight at Brain. Although the ball dipped as the keeper set himself, there was no excuse as he let it slip through his fingers and bobble across the goal-line. Worse was to follow for the home side, who have now taken only one point from their last 18, as Vale sub Louis Dodds crashed a half-volley into the roof of the net deep in injury time. The Silkmen had enjoyed the better chances with winger Danny Thomas forcing a point-blank save from Joe Anyon in the 16th minute with a flashing header. And after the break top scorer Gareth Evans jinked in off the by-line only to blast wide with the far corner beckoning. Vale began to find gaps in the home defence and skipper Marc Richards was unlucky not to bag the opener after 74 minutes when he thumped a volley from a narrow angle inches past the far post.
