Sammie Szmodics snatched an unlikely equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time to break Mansfield hearts and grab a 1-1 draw for Colchester.
It had seemed home substitute Craig Davies was to be the hero when he put the Stags in front at the second attempt from 18 yards nine minutes from time.
But a long throw from Ryan Jackson was met by a slight touch from Szmodics and the ball went through the hands of goalkeeper Conrad Logan.
The visitors had defended magnificently against a rampant Mansfield side that had scored 11 goals in their previous three games.
A dour first half was devoid of goalmouth action and only produced one real chance.
From their first corner in the 18th minute, Colchester tested Logan as Brennan Dickenson floated the ball to the far post where Luke Prosser's firm header was turned away.
