Oldham had to dig deep to earn a 0-0 Sky Bet League Two draw after a searching examination at Mansfield.
The Stags dominated the game and created a wealth of chances but failed to find a finish on the night just four days after hitting four past Northampton.
A totally one-sided first half saw Otis Khan turn a CJ Hamilton cross against the bar from six yards after just eight minutes, but Tyler Walker agonisingly sent a shot inches wide when sent through by Danny Rose's flick on 19 minutes.
Keeper Daniel Iversen then made three excellent saves to twice deny powerful near-post shots from Hamilton, coming in from the right, and a powerful Walker effort after Rose had won a loose ball as the half somehow ended goalless.
Early in the second half, the visitors at least had a couple of shots as Jose Baxter volleyed over and Rob Hunt shot inches wide.
For Mansfield, Mal Benning fired Will Atkinson's far-post cross into the side-netting early in the half while, just before the end, Atkinson agonisingly sent a diving header wide from four yards from Craig Davies' cross from the left.
