Metalist Kharkiv to face Olympiakos in last 16

Ukrainians Metalist Kharkiv romped into the last 16 of the Europa League as they hit another four goals past Red Bull Salzburg. Metalist claimed a 4-0 victory in Austria last week and they followed that up with a 4-1 triumph in Ukraine on Thursday to book a tie against Olympiakos in the next round. Martin Hinteregger's own goal ended any hopes Salzburg may have had of an unlikely comeback and, although Jakob Jantscher levelled in the second half, further goals from Jonathan Cristaldo, Sebastian Blanco and substitute Marlos sealed a resounding 8-1 aggregate success for the hosts. Metalist, with 16 goals to their name prior to this contest and the most dangerous attacking team in the competition, came closest to an early breakthrough when Freda Taison had a shot parried by Salzburg goalkeeper Alexander Walke in the 11th minute. The visitors' first attempt came in the 20th minute - but Jonathan Soriano saw his 20-yard shot blocked by defender Andriy Berezovchuk. Metalist did not need a helping hand after their first leg exploits - but they got it in the 29th minute when they were gifted the lead, Hinteregger's misdirected attempt to clear ending up in his own net. Taison shot wide for the hosts soon after, then in the 31st minute Blanco was off target with an attempt from 12 yards. Dusan Svento tried his luck at the other end in the 33rd minute - but his effort from 20 yards was wide. The home side finished the half on top and Cristaldo fired wide in the 38th minute, before Taison forced Walke into a fingertip save in the 45th minute.

Salzburg, to their credit, started the second half brightly and after Jantscher had brought a save out of home goalkeeper Oleksandr Goryainov in the 52nd minute, Rasmus Lindgren saw a 20-yard effort blocked by defender Sergei Pshenichnikh soon after. The visitors equalised in the 56th minute when Soriano set up Jantscher for a neat low finish from 12 yards. However, that sparked the home side into life and they regained their lead seven minutes later when Cristaldo beat Walke after good work down the left by Cleiton Xavier. Two minutes later it was 3-1 when Jose Sosa set up Blanco for a low shot which was too good for Walke. Walke saved from Marlos and Soriano before Jantscher shot over at the other end, and the scoring was concluded three minutes from time when Brazilian Marlos took a pass from Marko Devic and scored from close range.
