Alberto Medina fired Mexico to a 1-0 victory over 10-man Chile in their World Cup warm-up match.

Aguirre trims squad by two ahead of World Cup

Alberto Medina fired Mexico to a 1-0 victory over 10-man Chile in their World Cup warm-up match at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday. Medina scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute, the second time he has found the net in three fixtures leading up to the showpiece tournament in South Africa. Chile midfielder Manuel Iturra endured another game to forget, seeing red just seconds after coming on for a foul on Andres Guardado. It was Iturra's second dismissal in just five days after he was sent off for Universidad de Chile in a Copa Libertadores clash. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre fielded a strong team, led by veteran playmaker Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Javier Hernandez, who recently signed for Manchester United. Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa chose to go with a more experimental side, including fringe players such as goalkeeper Luis Marin and forward Jaime Valdez. Aguirre dropped defenders Juan Carlos Valenzuela and Adrian Aldrete from his preliminary World Cup squad before the match. Mexico's remaining 24 players now embark on a tour of Europe where they will meet England on 24th May, Holland on 26th May, Gambia on 30th May and Italy on 3rd June. During that hectic schedule, Aguirre will release one further unlucky player with all the final 23-man squads to be announced by 1st June.
