Cash-strapped Bolton will not renew Shola Ameobi's short-term contract, assistant manager Steve Walford has confirmed.

The ex-Newcastle striker, 34, signed for Wanderers back in October, after the Sky Bet Championship club had originally decided against offering him a deal, and he scored on his debut against Leeds.

However, that remains his only goal to date, and with Wanderers still desperately trying to balance their books, Ameobi's deal at the Macron Stadium will not be extended when it ends this week.

"He's obviously on a short-term contract which runs out on Saturday and we're not in a position to renew anybody's contract so this will be his last week at the football club," Walford confirmed.

"He's done fine in training and he's ready to play (against Eastleigh) if needs be.

"You'd like to keep someone of his experience around the football club but we're not in a position to do that. It's a shame but I'm sure he'll get fixed up somewhere else."

Wanderers face non-league Eastleigh in a third-round replay on Tuesday night without both Ben Amos and defender David Wheater.

Goalkeeper Amos will serve a one-match ban after being dismissed against Nottingham Forest while experienced centre-back Wheater, who came off in that fixture, is facing six weeks out with a hamstring strain.

"Wheater's injured, I don't know how long he'll be but it looks like it was quite a bad one so he could be out for up to six weeks," Walford added.

"He's a big, strong boy. He does what he's good at - he heads it, he tackles, he'll be a big miss for us."
