Northampton have completed the double signing of midfielder Jak McCourt and defender Gabriel Zakuani.

McCourt, 20, recently released by Barnsley, has signed a two-year contract while former Peterborough centre-half Zakuani, 30, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the newly-promoted Sky Bet League One club.

"Jak is a player I have worked with before and I know what he is all about," Cobblers manager Rob Page told the club's official website.

"I think he will fit in well, he is a player with a lot of potential with a fantastic attitude and is someone who I think is very talented."

McCourt progressed through Leicester's academy and joined Barnsley for an undisclosed fee in January. He made two substitute appearances for the Reds.

Democratic Republic of Congo international Zakuani, released by Peterborough in May, started his career at Leyton Orient and made nearly 100 appearances before Fulham signed him for £1million in 2006.

He had two loan spells at Stoke while at Fulham and in January 2009 signed a permanent deal with Peterborough for whom he made over 200 appearances, either side of a stint in Greece with Kalloni.

"Gaby is a huge character and is an excellent addition," added Page.

"He will be a big presence, not just on the pitch but in the dressing room as well and will be perfect for some of the younger members of the squad to look up to and learn from."
