Walsall have completed the signing of Joe Edwards on a free transfer from Colchester.

The 25-year-old full-back, who can also play in midfield, decided to leave the U's following their relegation to Sky Bet League Two.

He joins up with a Saddlers squad aiming to improve on last season's defeat in the semi-finals of the League One play-offs.

"I'm delighted to be here," Edwards, who has signed a two-year deal, told Walsall's official website. "It's a fantastic club and they had a really good season last year.

"I've played against Walsall a few times before and they have always been a very good footballing side. They like to pass it about and they play with a good intensity.

"I had a meeting with the manager a few weeks ago and I came away thinking this was the club for me. Sometimes it just feels right and the fit is perfect."

Former Yeovil captain Edwards, who began his career with Bristol City, was named Players' Player of the Year at Colchester last season after joining the club last summer.

U's director of football Tony Humes last month told his club's website that he was keen to re-sign Edwards but said he understood the player's desire to play at the highest level possible.

Walsall manager Jon Whitney was delighted with the signing and told the Saddlers' official website: "Joe is an experienced front-foot defender who is a leader on and off the pitch.

"I have been impressed with his performances when he has played against us over the years and he will be a valuable and influential member of the squad."
