Sky sources understand Hearts do not intend to appeal midfielder Sam Nicholson's red card which he received in the 1-0 defeat at St Johnstone.

Nicholson was sent off in the second half of the game by referee Nick Walsh for allegedly spitting at assistant referee Stephen Mitchell.

The Hearts substitute appeared to react to a foul throw decision late in the game.

Nicholson denied the offence and following the game, head coach Ian Cathro defended the player, saying the club would consider appealing the sending off.

Cathro said: "Sam says he just spat - not at the assistant referee. Players do that in a game of football, we've all seen that before.

"My understanding is that is the case from Sam's telling of the situation and other players around it."

However, it is understood that Hearts will not now pursue the matter and he will now miss the games against Dundee and Kilmarnock.
