Burnley striker Jon Walters will be out of action until at least Christmas due to a recurring knee problem.

Sky sources understand the Republic of Ireland international will miss his nation's attempt to reach the World Cup finals in next month's play-off.

The 34-year-old is still undergoing rehab work at Burnley, before being able to train again.

Walters was in Cardiff to offer his support to the Ireland team as they beat Wales on Monday night, but he has not played in the Premier League since the middle of August.
