Sky sources understand Stewart Downing faces an uncertain future at Middlesbrough due to a clause in his contract that will see him automatically given a new one if he starts another game.
The 34-year-old, who is in his second spell with Boro, had been a near ever-present under Tony Pulis this season, but has not started a match since December 29.
The former Liverpool and Aston Villa midfielder came on as a substitute in Boro's last three Championship matches, including Saturday's 1-1 draw with Millwall.
Downing's current deal is up in the summer and he would automatically trigger a year-long extension on the same terms if he makes a 23rd start of the season.
Pulis has taken Huddersfield winger Rajiv van la Parra on loan until the end of the season, and said on Friday he wants to add two more signings before the end of the month.
