Attacking midfielder returns home on loan after problems

Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen have loaned record-signing Carlos Alberto to Brazilian side São Paulo for the rest of the season. The loan move back home for the Brazilian attacking midfielder comes after fitness problems, including prolonged sleep deprivation, as well as a training ground fracas with team-mate Boubacar Sanogo last November. The 23-year-old has only made three substitute appearances for the club, whose manager Klaus Allofs said they discussed with the player the best way to proceed and agreed that the loan move would be a sensible solution.

Fresh start

"He can make a fresh start at Bremen in six months' time," he said. Alberto is looking forward to returning to Brazil, saying: "After my half year in Bremen and the health problems which set me back, I am looking to get fit again as quickly as possible and will get plenty of match practice in Sao Paulo." The Brazilian, who has won five caps for his country, was at Porto in 2004-5 when the Portuguese side won a host of honours, including the UEFA Champions League and Portuguese Championship. Bremen, who are currently second in the Bundesliga to Bayern Munich, are still reeling from the news that their German international Tim Borowski is set to join the table-toppers in the summer.
