Southampton defender Claus Lundekvam is to retire at the end of the season because of injury.
The Norwegian has decided to hang up his boots as he struggles to recover from a long-standing ankle problem.
Lundekvam had hoped to return to action last month after undergoing surgery but he broke down in training after suffering a recurrence of the problem.
The Saints skipper claims he has no option but to announce his retirement.
Lundekvam has made over 400 appearances for Southampton since arriving from Brann Bergen in 1996.
