Jonathan D'Laryea has expressed his surprise after being released by Mansfield at the end of the season.
The midfielder was one of seven out-of contract players not to be offered a new deal following Mansfield's relegation from League Two.
However, he claims he was told by manager Paul Holland that he would have a future with the club.
The former Manchester City trainee insists he would have been happy to stay with the Stags and was stunned to find out that he would have to move on.
"It came as a big surprise to me because Paul Holland said to me I would definitely be offered a contract," D'Laryea told the
Evening Post.
"I would have liked to have stayed and showed my true capabilities because I honestly felt that with a pre-season behind me I would get back to my old self.
"But then Dutch (Holland) rang me on the day the retained list was released and told me he didn't know if they would be able to offer me a deal.
"I was disappointed because I thought it was going to be all right, then it wasn't, but I understand it might not have been Dutch's fault. It was something he could not control."
