Brighton beat off SPL competition to land defender

Brighton are expected to complete the signing of Colin Hawkins from Coventry in the next 24 hours. The defender will join the Seagulls on a free transfer after Micky Adams beat off competition from three SPL sides to secure the deal. The 30-year-old has passed a medical at Withdean Stadium and is expected to pen a two-year deal on the South Coast. Adams is delighted to have completed his first signing since returning to Brighton for a second stint as boss, and believes the Irishman will add some much-needed steel to his defensive line.

Honours

"He is a no-nonsense defender, an experienced centre-half and a strong character who will be a good influence in the dressing room," Adams told the club's official website. "Colin has won a lot of honours in his home country and has played in the Championship with Coventry City. "He was very unlucky at Coventry with an injury just as he was establishing himself as a regular in the side. He is a very welcome addition to the Albion squad. I am very pleased we've got him."
Experience
Chairman Dick Knight added: "Colin is the type of player we have been targeting and his experience will help our other young defenders continue the excellent progress they made last season. "He has won four Irish league titles and is now over the injury problems at Coventry and keen to get playing again regularly. "He is looking forward to working with Micky and we warmly welcome him to the club."
Career
Hawkins began his career as a trainee with Coventry, before returning to his homeland in search of first-team football in 1997. He joined Doncaster in 2000 and enjoyed two seasons with Rovers before once more heading back to Ireland. It was Adams who then brought him back to the Ricoh Arena in July 2006, but he fell out of favour once Chris Coleman took charge of the club in February.
