Grant Smith has agreed a new one-year contract to stay with Carlisle United.

Midfielder impressed Ward in second half of last season

Grant Smith has agreed a new one-year contract to stay with Carlisle United. The midfielder linked up with the League One club on a short-term deal in January after leaving Dundee United. He made 18 appearances for Carlisle and Brunton Park boss John Ward is happy to have retained Smith. Ward told the club's official website: "He's made it clear from the moment that we opened talks that he wants to play his football here, and he's already shown us through the second half of last season that he can be a real asset. "In some ways it was a gamble for us to bring him here, but it was another one that we looked at as more of a long-term view, rather than a short-term fix. "We had a look at him, we stayed patient, and I think we have to give him credit in saying that he was very patient with it all as well. "Grant has been a great addition, and he has been a very good person to have around our football club."
