Kevin Nicholls is set to re-join Luton Town after agreeing a three-year deal with his former club.
The experienced campaigner was on the look out for a new club after his Preston contract was cancelled by mutual consent.
Luton start the League Two campaign with a 30-point deduction and Nicholls is under no illusions of the task his new club faces.
"I know we have a mountain to climb. However, this club has a long history and a special place in my heart," he told the club's official website.
"I am absolutely confident, with the other players planned to come in next week, that we will be very competitive for the entire season. I am delighted to be back, to be part of what the fans have started."
