Midfielder returns to France

Mathieu Berson has joined Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse on a free transfer from Levante. The French midfielder was allowed to leave the Spanish side as a result of the financial difficulties which have struck the club. Relegation from the Primera Liga last season has left Levante in a precarious state, forcing them to trim their wage bill. The 28-year-old began his career in his homeland with Nantes, before sealing a move to Aston Villa in 2004.

Defensive

However, he found first-team football hard to come by in England and moved to Auxerre on loan for the 2005/06 campaign. Levante then signed him on a permanent deal in 2006, but he once again finds himself on the move just two years later. "I am a defensive midfielder, more of a defender than a roving player and that's where I feel at ease," he told Toulouse's official website. "I realise there are other players in the squad playing in that position but the coach wanted to strengthen the side there, so that's why I have come."
