De Ridder and Kilbane on target

Wigan completed their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Utrecht in Holland. The Latics were largely untroubled by their Eredivisie opponents as goals in each half from Daniel De Ridder and Kevin Kilbane secured victory for Steve Bruce's men. Bruce's pre-match plans had been hampered by the fact that both new signing Amr Zaki and Antonio Valencia had been denied visas by the Dutch authorities so could not travel. Utrecht - who announced the signing of Morten Skoubo from Real Sociedad before kick-off - held firm for half-an-hour before Wigan's class told and they made the breakthrough. Dutch star De Ridder grabbed the goal as he won the battle with his team-mates to take a free-kick on the edge of the box and he showed great aplomb to curl the ball home. Wigan survived a scare on the stroke of half-time when Titus Bramble's loose ball across of his own goalmouth almost fell for Utrecht but Emmerson Boyce got back to clear. A Leroy George free-kick threatened Mike Pollitt's goal just after the break but it hit the side-netting and an hour in it was 2-0 as Kilbane connected from close range to volley home. Antoine Sibierski came close to making it 3-0 late on, but his strike smashed off the post and across the goalmouth to safety.
