Centre-back still to fully regain consciousness but is in stable condition

Former Manchester City centre-back David Sommeil's condition has improved in hospital following a heart attack. The 34-year-old has been hospitalised since collapsing at the end of a training session with current club Valenciennes on Wednesday. He is yet to fully regain consciousness but has left intensive care and his condition is 'stable'. A statement on the Valenciennes website said: "David Sommeil has slowly left the state of sedation in which he was placed artificially after his heart attack. "The patient is stable from a cardiac point of view." The club doctor Marc Chasselat revealed it was quite normal for Sommeil to have not fully regained consciousness.

Cerebral activity

"On Friday, he was still under anaesthetic effect. He had an electroencephalogram exam and the results showed cerebral activity," he told L'Equipe. The father of two was expected to be taken off breathing apparatus later on Saturday and will then have further neurological tests once he has completely woken up. He was sat on a bench taking in fluid and talking to team-mates when he collapsed at the end of training on Wednesday. A club doctor used a defibrillator on the player, who had been given mouth to mouth by a team-mate. L'Equipe has revealed that William Gallas, who knew Sommeil while studying at Caen, will visit him in a Valenciennes hospital on Sunday.
