Midfielder fails to shake off knee injury

Swindon Town midfielder Christian Roberts has failed to shake off a persistent knee injury and has retired from football. The 28-year-old had been unable to make a first team appearance this season after going under the knife over the summer in an attempt to resolve the problem. He began his career at Cardiff after progressing through the youth ranks at Ninian Park before moving to Exeter in 2000. A successful spell with the Grecians, which included 18 goals in 67 appearances, was then followed by a move to Bristol City.

Impact

Andy King then splashed out £70,000 to take him to Swindon in 2005, with Roberts making an immediate impact as he scored the winner on his debut against Oldham. On Dennis Wise's arrival at the County Ground in 2006 he was installed as vice-captain and played a vital role as the Robins secured promotion out of League Two. However, opportunities were less frequent once Paul Sturrock arrived in the managerial hot-seat, although he did make 33 appearances during the 2007/08 season before injury struck. Over the course of a distinguished career Roberts scored 62 goals in just over 300 career League starts.
