Pools striker looking forward to returning to Australia

Joel Porter is confident he has made the right decision to leave Hartlepool United to return to Australia. The striker has spent over five years with the League One club, but has agreed a deal with Gold Coast United when his Pools contract expires at the end of the season. Porter is relishing the chance to play in the A-League after signing a three-year deal with Gold Coast and has no doubts about turning his back on English football. The 30-year-old told the Peterlee Mail: "There was a few whispers that a few Championship sides were coming to watch, but I haven't heard anything. I don't have an agent or anything like that who can keep in touch with those sort of things.

"I was pretty ecstatic when I got the news that an Australian side was looking to get me back home. Once I got that in my mind there was pretty much only one thing I was going to do. "Gold Coast are a new team who only started up this year and have got some fantastic players. They are looking to win things and play in the Asian Champions League which is something that the top two clubs go into the following year. "It's a great area to live and it will be good not just for me but for my family. It makes it easier for the grandparents to see grandkids and so forth."
