Aberdeen have confirmed that Jamie Smith will not be offered a new contract this summer.

Dons look certain to release midfielder following series of injuries

Aberdeen have confirmed that Jamie Smith will not be offered a new contract this summer due to persistent injuries. The 28-year-old has been plagued by problems this season resulting in the midfielder racking up just nine SPL starts. The Dons had said that the former Celtic man had until the end of the campaign to earn himself a new deal but those hopes have now been quashed after he had to be carried off with yet another knock against Hearts on Tuesday. Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood will be sorry to see Smith leave, but the boss added that in the current economic crisis he can understand the board's judgement. "Jamie knows how much I think of him but you need your big players to be fit most of the season to achieve your targets," he told the Daily Record.

Injury blow

"Unfortunately it looks certain he won't play again this season which is a shame. "It's hard to convince your board to pay money for players who aren't fit to play for the team. "Football is a business which is being badly hit by the recession, cash is in short supply and Jamie knows that."
