Striker pens one-year contract

Northampton Town have signed former Gillingham striker Gary Mulligan in an intial one-year deal. The 24-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a one-year contract with the Cobblers with a view to extending his stay. Despite his youth, Mulligan boasts successful stints at a number of big-name clubs. Having started his career at Wolves, he then enjoyed a successful spell at Sheffield United in 2005. Brief loan stints at Port Vale and Gillingham followed before the talented youngster agreed a permanent deal with the Kent club in 2006. Cobblers boss Stuart Gray admitted his relief in finalising a deal, telling the club's official website: "I am delighted to add him to the squad.

Impressed

"Gary has been training with us for the last week or so and I think he has done well. "I felt we needed another senior striker in the squad and he gives us something different to Bayo (Akinfenwa) and Steve Guinan. "He has good movement and can give us legs up front, but he also has a presence about him. "He is another player who has won promotion from this league and I am delighted we have been able to agree terms with him."
