Goalkeeper bids to land Oldham contract

Oldham boss Dave Penney has offered James Spencer a chance to get his career back on track after handing the goalkeeper a trial. The 24-year-old has pitched up at Boundary Park in a bid to win a permanent stay at the League One club having been released by Rochdale. As a youngster Spencer, who made his professional debut at just 16 for Stockport, was tipped for the top. However, after making over 100 appearances for the Hatters he then went on to move to Rochdale, where his career stagnated. Oldham are on the lookout for a new keeper having allowed Greg Fleming to join St Mirren on a season-long loan. Penney told the Oldham Chronicle: "James has a lot of experience with Stockport and Rochdale and looked like being a top keeper at one stage, but he has lost his way. "It was probably a bit unfair last night as James didn't have a save to make. He probably wanted shots flying, but I wasn't really able to judge him."
