Winger heads to New Zealand after Palace exit

Wellington Phoenix have completed the signing of former Crystal Palace winger Paul Ifill on a two-year contract. The 29-year-old, who has also played for Millwall and Sheffield United, will link up with the team ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season. Ifill becomes the second Englishman to join the New Zealand-based outfit recently following the capture of ex-Tranmere striker Chris Greenacre. Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata is delighted the Barbados international winger has joined, and believes his pace and experience were the qualities the club were looking for.

Pressure

"There has always been a lot of pressure around signing a marquee-type player but we believed it was important to find the sort of player that was hungry to achieve and still had the passion to bring something to the club," Pignata told the club's official website. "In that respect we had very good reports regarding Paul and we are delighted to sign him. We wanted the right people and we're pleased we've got that. "Paul has pace, height and international experience - all the qualities we were looking for. With Paul and Chris we've got very, very good attacking options."
