The Maltese international is a free-agent after leaving Coventry City at the end of last season.
The 28-year-old has had approaches from a host of clubs both in England and on the continent.
Turkish club Ankaragucu offered him terms, as did Greek side Larissa - but he was unable to agree deals with them.
Sheffield United, Leeds and Charlton have all failed to convince him to sign, as Notts County look set to seal a deal.
It is understood Mifsud is locked in talks with The Magpies and could soon be unveiled as their latest high profile capture, following on from the likes of Sol Campbell and Kasper Schmeichel.
