Shrewsbury Town defender Michael Jackson has decided to call time on his injury-plagued playing career.
Jackson, 36, has been battling with a knee injury since the end of last season and had recently returned to the pitch on his specialist's advice.
The Liverpool-born defender had hoped his problematic knee would hold up through a full training session but he is still experiencing problems.
A firm favourite at New Meadow, he will continue to work as part of the coaching staff until at least the end of the season.
Shrews boss Paul Simpson admits it's a big blow not having Jackson in the squad but fully supports his decision to hang up his boots.

"It's a massive disappointment for Jacko that he has to come to this decision but he has to look at his long-term health," Simpson told the
club's official website.
"It's no good to continue to try and get back to fitness and risk having to have surgery somewhere down the line.
"He will be continuing to work on the coaching side of things here and that is good news for the football club.
"It's been good to have him around, his input has been good and he has the respect of all the staff and players."
