Dundee United captain Lee Wilkie has confirmed his retirement from football as a result of recurring knee problems. The 29-year-old defender has not played for six months after damaging his knee as a result of going over on his ankle in training. After eight operations and crippling arthritis, he has been forced to accept his playing days are over. Wilkie, who has two years left on his contract, told the Scottish Sun: "It's devastating but there is no alternative.

Over

"It's news I have been dreading for some time now but there is no getting away from it - my career is over. "I hoped I could play again but it's just not possible. "About a month ago I spoke to the club doctor and she said she didn't think I'd play again. "I told her it was no real surprise, that I knew in my heart of hearts I was finished. "But I've been up front with the chairman all along and he's been really supportive."
