Veteran midfielder Paul Sheerin accepts he is unlikely to be offered a new deal by St Johnstone at the end of the season.
Sheerin has made over 220 appearances since joining Saints from Aberdeen in 2004, but he has started only three games in the SPL this term.
The 35-year-old has been left frustrated by his lack of action in the top flight and understands why he is not likely to be rewarded with an extension by manager Derek McInnes.
"I am long enough in the tooth now to know the score," Sheerin told the
Perthshire Advertiser. "Age catches up with the best of us eventually.
"I would be surprised if I got another contract here. But that's football and I would understand it.
"It has been a frustrating season for me after being accustomed to playing almost every game in my time here. But the midfielders the manager has brought in have done exceptionally well.
"I won't lie. If I don't get offered a new contract it would be a wrench to leave.
"But I can see what Derek McInnes and Tony Docherty are trying to implement here. They have constructed set targets for players and the club is certainly heading in the right direction."
