Marc Fitzpatrick has been handed a short-term deal to prove himself after an injury-plagued season.

Stalwart given six month opportunity at Fir Park

Motherwell defender Marc Fitzpatrick has been given a chance to prove himself after an injury-plagued season at Fir Park. The 24-year-old only made five appearances for the SPL outfit last term following a hip injury and then a hamstring tear. But he has now been handed a six-month contract by boss Craig Brown, who took over at Well last December, to show what he can do. A delighted Fitzpatrick, who came through the youth system at Fir Park, told the club's official website: "Obviously I am delighted to have signed the contract to stay at Motherwell - I've been here a long, long time and built up a real feeling for the club.

Understand situation

"Ideally it would have been for a little longer but, in saying that, I understand the situation. I was out of contract at the end of this month so I am thankful I have something sorted. "I will now work through the whole summer with the aim of getting as fit as I can be when we return for pre-season training. If I can do that, hopefully, I'll do enough to have the contract extended beyond Christmas." Former Scotland boss Brown is pleased to be able to properly assess the experienced defender in the coming months. He said: "Marc had a horrible time with injuries last season; he was really unlucky. "He's a former Scotland U21 International who has played 136 games for Motherwell, including European football so we know he is capable. "But with him suffering so badly last year, Archie and I never had an opportunity to get a proper look at him which we will do now."
