South Korea FanZoner David Garrett is robbed of watching the Greece game by a wedding!
Big fat Korean Greek wedding dilemma
So the Taeguk Warriors start off with a tricky game against Greece. I was looking at some stats in the lead up to this mach and according to Fifa Greece are ranked 13th in the World. That can't be true! Greece...13th!
So Fifa think that Greece are better that the Czech Republic, Ivory Coast and Mexico. Hmmm...
And the same logic also tells us that South Korea are the 47th best team in the world. Not quite as good as Ecuador, Latvia or SCOTLAND! SCOTLAND! I'll be honest with you I fell out with FIFA for a while after reading that. Actually scrap that I've never been in love with them.
However I won't turn this blog into a tirade of how I dislike the governing bodies of the world's greatest sport or how I think that their complete refusal to look at goal line technology makes them all look like cavemen swinging clubs around their heads like Mansfield fans. Relax Dave, crikey.
Back to Port Elizabeth and South Korea versus Greece. It's going to be a tough one isn't it. Greece are always a hard nut to crack and therefore I'm hoping that Otto Rehhagel's team prove as successful as their nation's finances. In a strange twist of fate the referee for the match is from New Zealand, the very same team that I drew out of the hat in our World Cup sweepstake at work. That's one pound I'm never going to see again!
Hopefully we should have Lee Dong-Gook back from injury and he should play at least some of the game. And although he may not be remembered with too much fondness by all Middlesbrough fan's out there, when you are South Korea you take all that you can get.
Apart from that Huh Jung-Moo seems to have the whole squad to pick from. The lead up to the opener seems to have been good too. We narrowly lost 1-0 to Spain in our last friendly. I'm quietly confident and think one goal will see a warriors win.
Bakewell
And now I have to say congratulations to my uncle Andrew who is getting married in the great town of Bakewell on Saturday. This is the Derbyshire town where the grand Bakewell pudding is from. No not the one with icing and a cherry on you ignorant people. The other one that is jammy and gooey and lovely.
I think I'm straying from the point here. The match starts at half twelve on Saturday and the service is at one. What am I going to do?! I will be getting the sky+ on I think and pretending that the time difference between here and South Africa is a little bit bigger!
I will also be wearing a lot of red and might even paint my face. I mean who in their right mind organises their wedding on World Cup opening weekend. Although if anyone remembers the Annabel Croft show 'Interceptor', he was on that once, so respect for that!
Any England Fans out there who are working on Saturday night I feel your pain. Let's just hope that the Greek and U.S.A defences are as leaky as a BP oil well.
