Former Portugal international midfielder Maniche has signed an initial one-year deal with Sporting Lisbon.

Midfielder heads to homeland after Cologne exit

Former Portugal international midfielder Maniche has signed an initial one-year deal with Sporting Lisbon after leaving Cologne. The ex-Chelsea man parted company with the German outfit last month and had been widely expected to return to his homeland. A Sporting spokesman confirmed: "Maniche has signed with Sporting for a season with an option for two additional seasons." Maniche won the UEFA Champions League with Porto under Jose Mourinho and has also played for Benfica in Portugal. The 32-year-old was reunited with Mourinho at Stamford Bridge for a brief spell and his career has seen further stints with Dynamo Moscow, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. Sporting have also announced the signing of Brazilian defender Evaldo dos Santos Fabiano from Sporting Braga after the two clubs agreed a fee of €3million.
