Triple boost for Latics

Oldham's Rob Purdie, Andy Holdsworth and Jon Worthington will be fit to start pre-season training.

Purdie, Holdsworth and Worthington back from long-term injuries

Oldham Athletic have received a fitness boost after Rob Purdie, Andy Holdsworth and Jon Worthington were given the go-ahead to start pre-season training.

Purdie has yet to make an appearance for the Boundary Park side after signing from Darlington last summer, following a spate of injuries.

Holdsworth has been out since November due to a knee ligament problem and Worthington has had a lengthy spell on the sidelines after damaging ankle ligaments.

However, Latics manager Paul Dickov told the club's official website: "It is great to have Rob, Andy and Jon back and we must do everything we can to make sure they steer clear of further problems."

Smalley setback

Dickov, though, did suffer one blow earlier this week after striker Deane Smalley was ruled out of the start of pre-season training.

Smalley was troubled by a groin injury towards the end of last season and has now been forced to cut short a holiday in Cyprus to undergo an operation to solve the problem.

Smalley said: "I managed to get a last-minute flight home last Wednesday night as the club had booked me in to see a specialist on Thursday morning.

"And after seeing him, I was operated on that same afternoon which came as a shock."
