Fractured foot ends midfielder's World Cup

Uruguay midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro is out of the World Cup after sustaining a foot injury. The team announced in a statement on Saturday that the 21-year-old Ajax star has fractured a bone in his right foot and will miss the remainder of the tournament, including Uruguay's semi-final showdown against Netherlands on Tuesday. Lodeiro, who has made three appearances as a substitute in South Africa, suffered the injury during Uruguay's penalty shootout triumph over Ghana in the quarter-finals on Friday. Meanwhile, captain Diego Lugano is having tests ahead of the final-four clash after damaging the ligaments in his right knee, and is doubtful for the Cape Town encounter. Jorge Fucile is also under observation after suffering an awkward fall during the quarter-final, while fellow defender Diego Godin has returned to training from a thigh injury.
