Veteran shot-stopper decides to hang up his boots

Former Italy international goalkeeper Francesco Toldo is retiring from football at the age of 38. The Inter Milan shot-stopper, who started his career at rivals AC Milan, will now begin work for the Nerazzurri in an ambassadorial capacity. The Padua-born goalkeeper played 147 times for the Giuseppe Meazza giants after joining from Fiorentina back in 2001, but has not been first choice since the arrival of Julio Cesar five years ago. Toldo was on the bench when Inter won the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich back in May at the Bernabeu. "It will be a long holiday this year because I will stop playing. This is the first time I have said it officially and I'm quite emotional because it has been my job for 20 years," Toldo said on Inter's official website. The Italian won 28 caps for the national side and was first choice for the team that lost in the final against France at the 2000 European Championship. Toldo was famous for saving three penalties in the semi-final against Holland to help Italy to the final and he also won the 1994 European Under 21 Championship.
