McLeod and Hammond keen to impress Sturrock

Izale McLeod and Elvis Hammond have been handed the opportunity to impress during a trial spell with Southend United. The duo were in action for the Shrimpers' second string as they drew 1-1 with Oxford on Wednesday night in front of watching manager Paul Sturrock, although neither found the net. Striker McLeod is on the lookout for a new club following the end of his contract with Charlton, where he struggled to show the form which persuaded the Addicks to invest £1.1million in his services in 2007. The Birmingham-born 25-year-old came to prominence during a prolific spell with MK Dons where he scored 54 goals in 116 appearances. But his time at The Valley was disrupted by injury and they elected not to renew his contract at the end of the season. Fellow forward Hammond is also a free agent following two seasons with Cheltenham where he notched nine goals in 46 appearances. The former Fulham trainee has also enjoyed spells with Bristol Rovers, Norwich and Leicester during his career.
