Stopper leaves Bundesliga for second-tier club

Defender Marvin Matip has departed Bundesliga side Cologne for second-tier German club FC Ingolstadt 04. The 24-year-old has been at Cologne for five years but spent the second half of last season on loan with second division outfit Karlsruhe. The stopper, who was deemed surplus to requirements at Cologne and joins Ingolstadt for an undisclosed amount, is hoping to exercise his leadership skills at his new club. "I am really looking forward to this as I feel I have found a club with FC Ingolstadt 04 that possesses a good squad," Matip told the Cologne-based Express newspaper. "I feel I can serve as a sort of leader for these players in the second division." Matip, who made 91 league appearances for Cologne, is the younger brother of Schalke midfielder and Cameroon international Joel Matip.
