Veteran midfielder still expecting to hang up his boots in the summer

Claude Makelele has confirmed that he is still planning to slip into retirement this summer. The veteran Paris St Germain midfielder has dropped regular hints throughout the season that the 2010/11 campaign will be his last. He has been reluctant to shut the door entirely, admitting that he could change his mind at the last moment. For now, though, the 38-year-old claims he is still looking to hang up his boots at the end of the season. "I believe this will be my last season," Makelele told RTL. "I have made the decision and the club officials will accept my choice. It makes sense for me to step aside at this point."

Honours

Makelele has enjoyed a glittering career at the top of his chosen profession, claiming countless honours along the way. He has won league titles in France, Spain and England and helped Real Madrid to UEFA Champions League glory in 2002. He has also won 71 caps for his country and turned out for France at two World Cups and two European Championships.
