Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel says veteran striker Jon Dahl Tomasson is not guaranteed a spot in the squad next season.
The 34-year-old is out of contract with the Rotterdam club next month and has not yet been offered a new deal.
The striker's career has been plagued by injury since arriving for a second stint at Feyenoord in 2008, limiting his appearances for the club.
Van Geel will give the former Denmark international the chance to prove his fitness as Feyenoord prepare for next season before deciding whether to prolong his career.
"If he makes it, he gets a fair chance," Van Geel told Voetbal International.
"I admire him for his perseverance and professionalism. He's a smart guy.
"He has got the chance to end his career in a positive way, but I have told him frankly that we're not counting on him."
Should Feyenoord choose to retain Tomasson's services, he would only continue at the club on an amateur deal.
