Danish hitman hangs up boots after injury-plagued season

Veteran Feyenoord striker Jon Dahl Tomasson has called time on his playing career after struggling with injuries. The 34-year-old former Denmark international failed to make an appearance for the Rotterdamers last season due to a persistent leg problem. After being informed by doctors that he is still three months from recovering and "without any guarantees of getting back on the pitch", Tomasson has decided enough is enough. "That was the final straw for me, even though it was a very tough decision," he told Uefa's official website. "This is not an easy day for me, a sad day even, because being a professional footballer is the most beautiful thing there is.

Proud

"I am proud of my beautiful career. Winning the UEFA Cup with Feyenoord [in 2002] and winning the Champions League [with AC Milan] are the absolute highlights. "I always had an enormous drive to succeed and I think I got everything possible from my career - I could not have been better. I am a football animal, maybe even a football fanatic, but now I draw a line under my time as a player." Tomasson spent a brief spell at Newcastle before hitting the big time at Feyenoord and AC Milan, helping the Serie A giants to the UEFA Champions League title in his first season in Italy. The striker, who notched up 112 caps and 52 international goals for Denmark, will assume a role on the coaching staff of Feyenoord's sister club SBV Excelsior.
