Worthington adds striker to squad following withdrawals

Linfield striker Peter Thompson has been drafted into the Northern Ireland squad for Wednesday's Euro 2012 qualifier against the Faroe Islands. Northern Ireland coach Nigel Worthington's attacking options for the game have been severely hit by injuries and withdrawals. First-choice forward Kyle Lafferty is out due to a hernia injury, while Josh McQuoid (hamstring) and Martin Paterson (thigh) have withdrawn and there are doubts over Warren Feeney. To add insult to those injuries, uncapped Derry City forward James McClean opted to pull out of the squad having decided his international future lay with the Republic of Ireland. Former Stockport striker Thompson joins Northern Ireland's record goalscorer David Healy and uncapped Derby player Jamie Ward as Worthington's only fit strikers. Healy, recalled after being left out of the Carling Nations Cup squad, is now a certainty to start, with Ward first in line to provide support if Feeney is not passed fit for action. Celtic's Pat McCourt could also be deployed in an advanced role if needed, while any further losses could see the likes of Billy Kee or Liam Boyce promoted from the Under 21s.
