Ligue 1 title hopefuls bring in keeper cover

Lyon have moved quickly to address their goalkeeping crisis by drafting in Mathieu Valverde. With back-up keepers Remy Vercoutre and Anthony Lopes currently sidelined through injury, the Ligue 1 outfit have been left short on options. As a result, they have offered a short-term contract to former Toulouse shot-stopper Valverde. The 28-year-old was available as a free agent and has been handed a deal that will run until the end of the season. Valverde will provide able cover to first-choice keeper Hugo Lloris as he can boast Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League experience from spells at Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Bounce back

He is delighted to have been offered an opportunity at Stade Gerland and intends to make the most of his time with one of French football's leading lights. "Bordeaux were a big club, but Lyon are a level above," said Valverde. "Their results for the last 10 years prove it, and I am very happy to be part of this squad. "I think that Lyon are a great club that will allow me to bounce back." Valverde will go straight into Lyon's squad for their Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday.
