Player released after breach of club discipline

Port Vale have announced that they have terminated the contract of Gary Roberts with immediate effect. The League Two club launched an investigation after the 24-year-old arrived for training on Wednesday unfit for duty. The midfielder was suspended for two weeks and placed on the transfer list following a similar incident in September. His manager, Micky Adams, conceded the club had little choice but to terminate Robert's contract following this latest breach of club discipline. "Clearly, this is the second serious incident within a few months and this behaviour is not acceptable and cannot continue," Adams said in a statement on the club's official website. "Although Gary has talent on a football pitch, we have given him numerous second chances off it in addition to offering help with his personal issues. "Footballers are role models and their responsibilities extend far beyond the pitch. Therefore, we have been given no other option but to terminate his contract immediately." Roberts, who has previously battled alcohol and gambling problems, left all three of his previous clubs, Crewe, Yeovil and Rotherham, after discipline breaches. He had struggled to win his first-team place back since his suspension in September, making just four appearances, two of those as a substitute.
