Defender goes under the knife

Atletico Madrid defender Silvio has had an operation in a bid to solve a knee problem that has plagued him during his first season in Spanish football. The 24-year-old full-back will go under the knife in his native Portugal after suffering another setback in his bid to earn a regular place in Diego Simeone's team. After joining Atletico from Braga last summer Silvio has made only a handful of appearances before damaging his knee in mid-November against Levante in Vicente Calderon. Having recovered from that knock he played in the games against Lazio and Barcelona, but will now face several more weeks on the sidelines after the procedure in Porto. "The full-back felt instability in his knee on Friday, March 2 and has been undergoing a series of test since then and now it has been determined an operation was required," an Atletico statement read.
