The scout reports...

This week's report has meant a short trip across the Channel with Dutch starlet Jeffrey Gouweleeuw under the gaze. The 20-year-old defender is currently with Heerenveen and is attracting a great deal of attention after forcing his way into the first-team. Gouweleeuw joined the Frisian giants in 2006 as a 15-year-old from local side ADO'20. He quickly progressed through the youth teams and in 2009 he was called up to a first-team training camp, but it was not until the season after under new coach Ron Jans that he was brought fully into the senior fold. And even after his promotion, Gouweleeuw had to wait until early 2011 for his debut, which came against Excelsior. But little over 12 months later, the young defender is emerging as one of the top prospects in Holland. He is now a regular next to Ramon Zomer in the heart of Heerenveen's defence. Gouweleeuw has been called into the Dutch Under-21 set-up, with a senior call-up already being predicted for the 20-year-old. Gouweleeuw is a truly classy performer; he has outstanding feet for a defender and has no qualms about bringing the ball out of defence. His excellent pace also means he can break into attack if needed, whilst also covering his own back-line. Gouweleeuw has likened himself to Barcelona's Gerard Pique, which is not beyond the realms of fantasy, although you can also favourably compare him to someone like England's Gary Cahill. Like with Pique and Cahill, Gouweleeuw is also adept in the opposition box when attacking. He has blossomed under Ron Jans's tutelage at the Abe Lenstra, but with him leaving this summer it remains to be seen what impact that might have on Gouweleeuw's future - who has two-years left on his current deal.

The scout says...

A host of clubs are checking on Gouweleeuw, and he really looks like an outstanding prospect. English, Spanish and Italian are all thought to be looking at him and it would be little surprise if he was granted a move this summer, although another 12-months in the Eredivisie would do him good.
