Reading captain Jem Karacan has paid tribute to former manager Nigel Adkins following his departure this week.

Adkins was axed on Monday along with assistant Andy Crosby and first-team coach Dean Wilkins following a poor run of results culminating in a 6-1 defeat at Birmingham, with Steve Clarke appointed new Royals boss on Tuesday afternoon.

Karacan wrote on Twitter: "On behalf of the players, I want to thank the gaffer, Cros and Deano for everything they did here. They couldn't have worked any harder and earned massive respect from everyone here.

"Now, we as players, have to take responsibility to go out there and perform - starting on Saturday.

"On a more personal note, a big thanks to Nigel, who gave me the armband this season and I'll always be grateful for that."

Midfielder Karacan has been sidelined all season with a knee injury but revealed he is back in training and close to returning to action.

"I have been more frustrated than anyone to not be able to be out on the pitch on a Saturday," he added.

"I began training today with the first team and will hopefully be available for selection over the Xmas games."
