Saint-Etienne may be forced into the transfer market after midfielder Renaud Cohade suffered a suspected knee ligament injury in Tuesday's Coupe de la Ligue defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Cohade was forced off at half-time in the quarter-final after a collision with PSG midfielder Thiago Motta and was replaced by Benjamin Corgnet, who himself then left the field with a thigh problem.

PSG eventually won the match 1-0 with a scrappy goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but a cup exit may be the least of Les Verts' worries.

Coach Christophe Galtier told L'Equipe: "We think one of (Cohade's) ligaments was damaged in the contact.

"We will send him for scans but I trust our doctor. It's very unfortunate if he is out for a long time.

"We lost two players, one for quite a long time, in addition to the players who have gone to the African Nations Cup.

"January and February are important months to get into a good position for the spring. We will see how we handle it and if we need to find a reinforcement from outside."

Guinea international Florentin Pogba and Ivory Coast pair Ismael Diomande and Max Gradel are all away in Africa.

Reflecting on Tuesday's match as a whole, Galtier said: "My team played the way I was looking for, with our qualities.

"We had chances when the score was level and we defended well and did not give away too many chances.

"I don't have much to criticise my players for, they gave all they had to give but it was not enough to beat PSG, who are very difficult to play against."
